Wilco Models Space:1999 Props
A Review by Anthony Taylor

I wanted to send you a quick out of box review on Wilco Models' New Space: 1999 Stun Gun and Commlock replicas. Both are cast in tan odorless resin and need a bit of cleanup. Let me first say that for the prices of these kits ($25.00 for the Stun Gun and $35.00 for the Commlock), it is hard to be too critical of them. I have seen other kits selling for twice and three times as much as these that were no better or more accurate.

Taking a look at some reference from the show, the Stun Gun looks to be the correct size and proportion. The casting was fairly good with just a few light seams to sand. The firing button on top seems a bit stubby in length and too high, but this could be solved by sawing it off and sanding it to the correct height, then lengthening it a bit with some putty. The kit includes a STUN/KILL setting switch to make it accurate to the second season props if you like; however, no decals were included so

you are on your own for the lettering. Also, the switch does not slide, it is fixed, so decide up front whether you want to stun or kill. The only major problem I see with the kit is the body release assembly (that lip with the hole through it) at the bottom of the handle grip; it is totally out of proportion and should be removed and scratchbuilt. Again, for $25.00 its  a good start on an accurate replica.

On to the Commlock. Again, size and proportion seem correct, however the casting on this piece left a bit to be desired. A profusion of tiny air bubbles were evident in the  broadcast antenna as well as one fairly large one. In fact, the resin seemed fairly frothy up the entire backside of the prop. Luckily this side faces the wearer if you are creating the prop to go with a costume, but it  still needs filling and sanding for display.

Detailing is fairly sharp, and the kit includes a belt clip, although it would have been nice to have some sort of mounting bracket included on the prop itself to insure accurate placement. A small decal sheet includes the numerical faces for the keyboard and the owner identification panel for Commander Koenig. Checking reference, I see several other small circle and box decals  on the hero props that should have been included here.

Overall, these are very nice kits at a terrifically reasonable price. For fans of the show who have been looking at other more expensive kits, this is a great and affordable alternative. For more information or to order, email Bill Lenches at wilcomodels@hotmail.com or get in touch with him at
