Thorsten Scholz' Voyager |
|

|
This Voyager model is the first version that came out and I build it around ´96/'97. It is a straight out of the box build
because I was unaware of inaccuracies back then.
What really bothered me was the lack of detail. The decal sheet provided had only the standard that could be expected: registry number, Starfleet arrow head and the transporter emitters. No life boats, phaser markings or what so ever.

Fortunately I already could get hold of the book The Art of Star Trek and at the beginning of the Voyager chapter a nice picture
of the ship can be found. On the picture I noticed a lot more detail on the hull then was provided by the kit, but the picture is to small to see some thing use full. Fortunately my trusted model
sales man had a large stand up Voyager, it came like send from heaven. Putting the model together was not all that difficult, but getting rid of the seams was!

First big decision was, what primary color for the ship? The picture in the book is much to kind of blue to tell and the stand
up was worn out by the sun. So I went along with the color I had already used on the classic and the D, a light grey (stone grey). Variations of the hull color could be seen on the pictures but not
exactly how it looked, therefore I tried to come up with a pattern of my own, while staying true to the reference.

Next where the phaser banks, they are painted in medium grey mixed with some light green (I didn't know that the true color was
some kind of yellowish grey) on a dark grey base. There are some sections at the under side of the primary hull around the main deflector, between the hanger bay and the impuls engines as well as below
the hangar bay that have been painted with a mixture of light grey and light green. It's that long ago I don't rember all the color variations I used then, but after the overall paint job was done I
focused on the details.

These included: Phaser bank stripes, warning markings around the main deflector dish, pain staking painting of the sensor
arrays, certain details around the saucer rim (besides the sensor array) including the docking ports, auxiliary deflector, landing legs, some very small rectangles scattered over the upper and lower half
of the saucer... well to make a long list short, every thing else besides the above mentioned decals. Hardest where the windows! The model comes with out dividing struts at the larger windows, so these
had to be paint by my own, is till remember that I don't want to ever do it again!

As I recall it took about half a year to get the model done (including the time to get some more reference material and walking
over to the stand up Voyager). I'm still very pleased with how she turned out to look and not sure if I would build here again (see above why).
