Here is my AMT Klingon Bird of Prey. I lit it using mostly LEDs, a few 12 volt bulbs and four ultra-brite-white LEDs.
I opened all the portholes and filled them with clear epoxy. I drilled the spot-lights in the wing area and installed 3mm LEDs that I had flattened their domed top to simulate the original. The effect is very close to the look in the movies. Kind of like a car with its high beams on. The navigation beacons are made of fiber optics that I filed to a bullet shape. It took a lot of masking to do the air-brushing especially under the wings. There is some extremely light weathering in some areas, as I prefer the showroom new look as opposed to the junkyard beater. I didn't like the decals that it came with so I printed some of my own and took a little artistic liberty with them. I closed the open side of the stock stand with some sheet plastic. There is a mini phono plug on the top that matches the socket mounted in the model. I first painted the stand gold then cover it with a clear red. The stand is bolted to a polished wood base with two torx head screws to give it that Klingon high-tech-caveman look. The wood base has power plug and toggle switch and the bottom is cover with felt.
