I had a bunch of old ST models lying around and I was really pumped about these new sites I found! Specifically it was Trenton Bennett's
Enterprise D that not only inspired me to redo my horribly put together Enterprise D but gave me the tips for aztecing and other details.
So, thus came about my 1/1400 Galaxy-Class Variant (phaser banks on nacelles and three impulse engines) the U.S.S. Winfield Hancock. As I
said, I had originally bought this model back in 1998-9, slapped it together and called it quits.
The thought of aztecing didn't even occur to me until I came to this site. I then stripped it and started from scratch, doing the dreaded
aztec pattern by hand. I used a base coat of Testors Camouflage Grey and the pattern was about 3/4 Light Sea Grey and 1/4 Camouflage Grey (a tip from Bennett). I got some awesome custom decals from JT Graphics (from
Federationmodels.com) which really brought out the detail in the model. The lifeboats are almost as tedious as the aztecing. The windows were done with a black Pilot pen and white paint with a toothpick. The base
was reinforced with a piece of wood and a slab-job internal brace. It isn't very straight so I might have to go back and rework that when I get the time.
