BuildEnterprise
Rick Rayl's Nebula

This is an extensive modification to the old Macro Trek kit. You've posted pics of what she used to look like on your site, this is what you can do with a little time and also scavenging parts from another E-D!

This project began very quietly, as a simple plan to replace the sagging resin warp nacelle pylon structure with the same piece from the plastic kit. As soon as I took the model apart, though, I decided to also correct the pod dorsal pylon with styrene plant on pieces after I'd sanded smooth the resin detail. Once that was done, I figured what the heck - I also scratchbuilt a new more accurate pod.

When I placed the warp engines on the new pylon, I realized they were too far foreward - the Nebula's warp engines needed to be pushed farther back than the E-D. So, new engine connection pionts were cast, and the old ones removed from the kit.

Finally, the most interesting modification came when I decided to fix the secondary hull. I liked the shape of the Macro Trek part, but not the depth. (I'm talking V2.0 here, MT did a first version with a secondary hull that was too long and narrow). I took the secondary hull, and  then took the plastic kit part of the bottom of the secondary hull. I cut around the lower curve of the plastic part, then cut a small groove in the front where it meets the deflector dish.

Working  carefully with a paint stripping gun, I melted the plastic part to conform to the resin hull, making sure to meet the two edges of the groove I'd cut and also to keep all the edges flush with the resin part.  The result is a hull with the same width as the resin piece, but now with the correct depth as well. All that was needed was to fill in the gaps and make a new deflector!
