Polar Lights Godzilla Review

GODZILLA from Polar Lights

This is a big model, with over 70 parts.   When built, this monster kit [and I do mean MONSTER] stands 16 inches tall.   The sculpt accurately captures the look of the original King Of Monsters.  The kit goes together quickly and the parts fit together well.   Like all styrene figures, this kit may eventually fall apart from handling.  The two areas of weakness I worry about are where the tail attaches to the body, and the spines along the back may get knocked off.

You're still going to need to do some work.  Because of the way this kit was molded, the detail in the area of the seams goes very soft.  I created a number of "texture stamps" by impressing bits of putty into the existing detail.   When hard, I generously applied putty over the seams and used the "stamps" to recreate the texture. I used two-part epoxy putty from Aves. You'll need a lot!

The rail cars are not well shaped and the proportions are weird.   I ditched them and went over to my local train shop.   For replacements, HO scale is far large for this kit at 6 or more inches long.   Even N gauge is too big if you are looking for passenger cars.  All the modern looking N gauge passenger cars were extremely long.  The best-sized train cars I found were Z .

gauge, the smallest of train gauges.   However, these were very expensive, running $30 bucks and up per train car.  I ended up buying some N gauge freight cars that will look pretty good when painted up and weathered down. They were about $7 each. I also found a smaller, better detailed tank for about $7.]

One additional comment... because of the size of this figure, and the detail on the hide, this may have been a good candidate for a vinyl kit.   I wonder if Polar Lights considered this possibility.   Using vinyl would have solved the concern of the soft detail along the areas of the seams and still made a great kit.

Did I mention the great box art by Chris White?

Overall, this is perhaps the best looking styrene Godzilla I've ever seen. I think any Godzilla fan/monster fan/figure builder will like adding this figure to their collection.  As with all models, a little TLC is needed to bring this to life, but nothing that any modeler can't handle.  Get down to your Toys R Us, as these are sure to sell fast
