Orlando Guiang's Type 9 Shuttlecraft

Quite a variety of shuttlecraft designs have been seen on Star Trek. One of the sleeker configurations was the Type 9 Shuttlecraft as seen on Star Trek Voyager. It was amazing how a number of them were either destroyed or lost on the show.  You'd figure they'd just run out of them at some point.

Thanks to the many different resin manufacturers we modelers now have access to a whole host of designs that wouldn't have been available to the mass market; this resin it from Resin Ranger is one example.   The model comes in 4 solid pieces that displayed fairly clean detail.  There were huge chunks of resin on the back of each nacelle, which had to be cut and sanded away, but for the most part the model was decent.

I began construction by cleaning off the model with Acetone in order to prep it for priming. I glued the two halves of the main body together and filled in the seams with putty.  The most difficult part was working with the struts and nacelles.  The struts (that support the nacelles) come with grooves on the inner side that attaches to the hull.  These grooves are supposed to allow one to slide the struts onto the tabs that are along the side of the shuttlecraft.  Although it seems like a good idea for providing support, I thought the grooves and tabs were poorly formed so I simply cut the tabs off and attached the struts directly to the side of the hull using super glue gel.  The gel is a great way to apply the adhesive by the way. I gave ample time for it to dry and found that the bond was very sturdy.  I proceeded to apply all of the painted and surface detail first and attached the nacelles last.

All the colors were by Testors and these were as follows:

Hull- Light Gray
Window outlines - Tan
Nacelles - light blue
Upper Hull component - Dark Ghost Gray
Side detail - mixture of light orange and brown

The model measures 9 inches in length and makes a great look miniature.  It is pretty exact.  The stand was made using a wood plaque and a 1/4 inch aluminum rod. As always  I used a badge from a Playmates action figure to give it more detail. Last but not least, I had to use photoshop to work up some unique shots. If you really want this replica I'd say it's worth buying although it is a bit pricey at 70.00.
