BuildEnterprise

Orlando Guiang's Defiant

Out of any of the Federation ship designs that appeared on Star Trek, the Defiant was definitely different.  The ship, of course, was a workhorse for the DS9 station and appeared in one of the better STNG films, ST First Contact.  During the battle scene, we see the Defiant, among other Starfleet ships, in combat against the Borg cube. The ship took much damage before the awesome Enterprise showed up to save the day. This is a replica of the battle damaged Defiant.

The model was built from the AMT kit and it was modified to reveal the underlying structure in the damaged areas. After painting the hull color scheme, the hull was cut in areas over the nacelle and forward hull.

The edges of each cut was then carefully heated, peeled back and twisted to duplicated melted metal. An airbrush along with pastels were used to create the burnt, charred surface. Next I took battle ship parts as well as those scavenged from an old X wing model and painted them black. They were glued to the inner surface of the hull and fitted into the exposed areas. As a reference I used pictures of the actual studio model.

Although it can be time consuming, modifying models in this way is one of my favorite things to do. Makes it interesting to say the least. What resulted here was a pretty decent replica of that "Tough little ship."
